Behgjet Pacolli’s Mabetex Group donates the reconstruction of the AUK campus

President of the Mabetex construction group, Behgjet Pacolli financed the
conversion and rebuilding American University of Kosovo

American University of Kosovo

American University of Kosovo

After the NATO intervention that ended the Kosovo war in 1999, a number of prominent Kosovars sought a way to honor and memorialize the role the United States played in that conflict.

After much discussion, a major donation from the Union Fund for the Reconstruction of Kosova (UFORK) funded the start-up of the American University in Kosovo Foundation in 2002.

The UFORK fund was the post-war balance of the money raised by the Kosovo diaspora during the 1990s to support the underground “parallel institutions” in Kosovo of the Kosovo government-in-exile, headed by Prime Minister Bujar Bukoshi.

History and Mission

History and Mission

This money represented small donations from tens of thousands of people, and AUK is always mindful that it was founded by the hard-earned contributions of the people of Kosovo.

AUK opened its doors in temporary facilities in 2003, in a house on Sunny Hill (Bregu i Djiellit) in Prishtina.

The question of a permanent home for the university was settled in 2004 by the generous contribution of the Municipality of Prishtina of a lease on part of the former Shkolla Normale campus at Germia.

A further, very generous contribution by Mr. Behgjet Pacolli, President of the Mabetex construction group, financed the conversion and rebuilding of what are now AUK’s two main buildings, allowing us to move to Germia in 2005

Behgjet Pacolli organized ELDR conference, in Grand Hotel in Prishtina dated on 26, 27 and 28 June 2009

These days in Prishtina took place ELDR conference, where different topics reagrding problems on the south-east Balkan, were disscused.

Kazakhstan’s capital develops into a GEM

Astana

Astana

Twenty years since the end of Soviet rule, and ten since the founding of its new capital city, Astana, Kazakhstan is thriving like never before thanks to some helpful inward investment by construction giant THE MABETEX GROUP.

One of Mabetex’s greatest achievements in Kazakhstan has been the transformation of the President’s residence

Presidential Palace

Presidential Palace

The President ’s residence

One of the greatest symbols of MABETEX’s achievements in Kazakhstan has been the transformation of the President’s residence. It is now a luxurious home whose splendor is a delight to visiting foreign dignitaries and to President Nursaltan Nazarbayev, who lives there. Situated on the left bank of the river Essyl, its architecture combines classic, modern and ethnic influences. The president’s residence is part of a complex of modern administrative buildings in the new centre of the city– and its main purpose is to symbolize the new face of Kazakhstan.

Its past as a part of the repressive former USSR is fading quickly into the background as Kazakhstan takes confident strides into the future. And central to this modernizing has been the rejuvenation of Astana. Since taking over from the former capital of Almaty, some 600 miles to the south, Astana – Kazakh for “capital city” – has been continuously evolving and is now considered Central Asia’s pre-eminent city. Many international companies have contributed to this transformation, but none more so than the Swiss construction and development company MABETEX, who have played an essential role in the building and rebuilding of state buildings throughout Astana.

Republic Ski Lodge in Borovoe

Another sporting project MABETEX have undertaken is at the Republic Ski Lodge in Shuchinsk town.

Ski Lodge in Borovoe

Ski Lodge in Borovoe

The geography of Kazakhstan makes the country natural skiing terrain and the Republic Ski Lodge is aiming to be the pre-eminent skiing destination in Central Asia. Some 230 km’s from Astana, the lodge is located in the scenic resort of Borovoe. MABETEX have designed a new ski jump for the resort, the first in the world to combine NS-135 and NS-100 categories with starting tables at different levels. The ski jump measures 350 meters horizontally and has a reinforced concrete framework. To top it all off, there is an amphitheatre which can hold 3,000 spectators.

The backdrop for all this is the beautiful bald mountain of Kamenuha, which has an altitude of 485,70 meters, and is a picture-perfect snowy setting.

Peace, stability and economic growth are what have defined Kazakhstan over the last decade. While neighboring countries haven’t all fared so well, buoyed by the strong returns from their Caspian Sea oil reserves, the Central Asian republic has avoided corruption and focused on inward growth. And MABETEX have been integral to the success of the last decade. The Swiss company believes in sustainable growth for Kazakhstan combined with a strong ethos of corporate social responsibility.

Saranda VIP village

Saranda / Khazakhistan

Saranda a large residential project in Astana / Kazakhstan

As well as the presidential residence itself, MABETEX has constructed a VIP village, Saranda, in this same neighbourhood, creating an idyllic community for Astana’s citizens.

Saranda VIP village

Saranda VIP village

Surrounded by parks on two sides and with the river Ishim on one side and river Nura on the other, there is a sense of peace and tranquillity here. This is a place where locals can

relax and enjoy the fresh air.

This VIP village is divided into three zones. The north zone consists of 26 villas, each of 1,500 to 2,500 square metres in size. The south zone is much larger: it spans 41 hectares and

consists of 160 villas, which vary in size from 400 to 1,500 square metres. This zone was innovatively laid out with a circular design – a natural lake occupies the centre while the roads curve around it. The luxurious villas are designed to buyers’ exact specifications; styles vary from Mediterranean, inspired by marquises and verandas, to Venetian-Palladian (think doges and patricians); even a request for a French nobleman’s castle can be met.

The third zone of the Saranda village caters to those who prefer apartment block living: there are 13 complexes of elite apartment buildings. Each complex consists of two blocks of five and four storeys, connected with a covered swimming pool. No detail has been overlooked in these exquisitely designed apartments – from the generous allocation of parking spaces in the underground parking area to the high-speed elevators which can whisk you from the basement

right up to the luxurious penthouse.
